Hello, my name is Jesse Williams, and I am a Certified Peer Specialist working with You are Accountable.
I was fortunate to grow up with a supportive family system. While most of my family members led relatively normal lives, my mother struggled with alcoholism and abusive relationships. As a child, I discovered my passion for baseball and became quite skilled at it. However, an injury led to knee surgery, introducing me to opioid pain medications, which I soon became dependent on.
At 16, I faced my first arrest for minor possession of alcohol. Dismissing the gravity of the situation led to further arrests and complications. That same year, I underwent a second knee surgery and was prescribed more pain medications. This time, I couldn't stop. When the doctor ceased the prescriptions, I resorted to buying them illicitly and even stealing from my family, desperate to feel "normal."
My addiction spiraled, leading to a court-mandated 96-hour hold. Upon release, I immediately sought more pills. An acquaintance introduced me to heroin, which I quickly became enamored with. My situation worsened when I began injecting and was introduced to Suboxone in an outpatient program. I thought to myself this was all I needed to stay sober, and once again I was completely wrong. I went back to using and terrorizing everyone around me.
My continued drug use and behavior led my brother, a police officer, to arrest me due to outstanding warrants. After spending several months in jail, I was determined to get sober. However, my sobriety was short-lived as I relapsed, this time with fentanyl, leading to my first overdose. Despite two more overdoses, I felt trapped in my addiction, believing sobriety was unattainable.
At my lowest point, facing a potential 14-year prison sentence and feeling suicidal, my brother intervened once more, leading to another brief jail stint. January 21st, 2016, marked a turning point in my life.
I entered inpatient treatment and met a Peer Specialist who profoundly impacted me. Their guidance helped me believe in myself and recognize areas of my life that needed change. After 37 days of sobriety, I joined "The Recovery House" in St. Louis, Missouri. There, I learned the tools necessary for sustained recovery, such as the 12-step program, therapy, and building a supportive community. Today, nearly eight years sober, I've rebuilt my life, finding joy in my family, career, and personal growth.
My transformation inspired my journey as a Peer Specialist, aiming to show others that recovery is possible, even when it seems out of reach.
A common misconception about individuals like me is that we're beyond redemption. But I stand as living proof that change is possible, and with the right support, anyone can turn their life around.
