As someone who exited treatment the week before Thanksgiving, I know how scary this time of year can be for someone in early recovery.
Here are some tips that have served me well when I know I'm entering a potentially triggering situation. Hopefully they will help you or someone you know!
1) I know I can leave any event no matter what it is if I feel uncomfortable.
2) I remind myself that literally no one cares that I am not drinking.
3) I plan what meetings I will go to or what supports I can implement ahead of time.
4) I call another sober person before and after any event I'm nervous about.
5) I go in with a service mindset (How can I help other people today?)
6) I'm mindful of how grateful I am for all I have.
7) I plan an activity I'm excited about if possible.
Have fun, be safe, and You Are Accountable is here if you need additional support with your recovery!
