Thinking of this holiday season, I can’t help but think of the word Gratitude. Before sobriety, gratitude was not even in my vocabulary, nonetheless a word that I could put action behind. I had a lack of perspective, and did not see anything good in my life.
Throughout my sobriety, Gratitude has allowed me to appreciate things in my life, especially the things that I never thought I would get back again.
I have learned in my sobriety that gratitude is an action word. My gratitude speaks and shows in not just how I just show up for my life today, but also just as important as how I show up and treat others.
For me, gratitude allows me to be appreciative of all that has been given to me through my sobriety, and I don’t mean the materialistic things. Sobriety has slowly given me relationships back, it has given me the ability to begin to love myself for the first time, and it has given me the need to give back and show up for others.
Gratitude has given me the opportunity to want to share with others and to show that with a little shift in perspective, life is a lot more beautiful than we may seem to see it. This shift in perspective allows me to be grateful that I get to show up for life each day, and that I get to enjoy life, for the first time in a long time.
Practicing gratitude on a daily basis allows me to focus on the good things in life instead of only focusing on the bad things.
Gratitude allows me to notice and count my blessings. It allows me to see all of the amazing things in my life, in the moment.
I have learned that when I make the choice to have gratitude, that my days are better, that I talk to myself kinder, and I want to be there for others. This tool of gratitude has been a life changer for me and has helped me escape the darkness and appreciate life. I had to make the choice to begin to practice it and still have to on a daily basis.
Throughout this holiday season, and even the times afterwards, I would challenge all of us, and myself included, to begin to and continue to practice gratitude.
We are all blessed, and we are all doing a lot better than we may tell ourselves.
