9 Tips to Have a Sober, Safe, and Enjoyable Holiday Season in Recovery
I know for me, heading into the holiday season in early recovery was hard. I was worried about people drinking around me and was anxious about how I would fare with potential looming triggers. Here are a few things that were helpful for me:
1) I tried to be aware of the emotions tied to the day and game plan for those (having supportive people to call was key).
2) I knew that if I was facing someone who was going to get under my skin, I tempered my expectations and was prepared for anything to come my way.
3) I know I can leave any event no matter what it is if I feel uncomfortable.
4) I reminded myself that literally no one cares that I am not drinking.
5) I called my sponsor or supportive person, before, and after any event I'm anxious about.
6) I planned what meetings I'm going to ahead of time.
7) I go in with a service mindset (How can I help people today?)
8) I was mindful of how grateful I am for all I have.
9) I planned an activity I'm excited about if possible for after the Holiday party. This is very helpful in grounding me.
I hope you all have a wonderful, safe and sober Thanksgiving! We can’t wait to hear how it went!
